Doctors and scientists are continuing to learn more and more about the lingering effects some people experience after contracting COVID-19.
Some studies have linked COVID-19 with hearing and balance-related issues like tinnitus, vertigo and hearing loss. While more research is needed to understand the correlation, let’s look at what we know so far.
Ear Symptoms Associated with COVID-19
Below are some of the more commonly reported ear-related symptoms experienced after an acute COVID-19 infection.
- Tinnitus is a ringing in your ears. However, some people also describe the sensation as hissing, buzzing, clicking, or other noise. Tinnitus can be distracting and disorienting for those who experience it.
- Vertigo is a form of dizziness characterized by the feeling that you or your environment is moving or spinning, despite the lack of any actual movement. It’s caused by disturbances in the inner ear or the brain. Many times, an infection (such as COVID-19) is the cause of the disturbance.
- Ear pain and hearing loss have also been reported.
What Studies Say
Research published in the International Journal of Audiology recently reviewed 56 studies examining the link between hearing and balance problems and COVID-19. They found that among people who have recovered from COVID-19:
- 14.8% of patients experience tinnitus
- 7.6% have hearing loss
- 7.2% experience vertigo
While these may appear to be sizeable numbers, the researchers stressed that more research needs to be done to determine the incidence and severity of hearing and balance issues as they relate to COVID-19. These numbers could be an overestimation as they rely on patient questionnaires as opposed to diagnostic tests.
What to Do
While we don’t yet know the full scope of COVID-19’s effects on hearing and balance, what we do know is that anyone experiencing them deserves treatment and support.
Struggling with balance or hearing issues, even if they aren’t severe, can keep you from doing things you normally enjoy like playing a round of golf or going for a walk at Lake Underhill Park.
If you are experiencing any lingering hearing or balance symptoms after recovering from COVID-19, don’t hesitate to reach out to a medical professional. They can help you come up with a treatment plan, manage your symptoms and improve your health.
