Hearing Healthcare for Your Child

At Davis Family Hearing, we are equipped to test children of all ages, including newborns. Before the age of 5 is critical for your child to acquire speech and language. If a child has hearing loss, speech and language development will be delayed and overall learning can be negatively impacted. If you have any questions about your child’s hearing, we are here to help. We are a full-service audiology clinic with a kid-friendly environment. We will answer any of your questions and guide you through any treatments that might be necessary for your child. Whether your visit is for a hearing test, ear infection, or for hearing aids or cochlear implants, we are here to take care of you and your child. Our doctors are patient, friendly, and will provide a calm environment where you can learn about your child’s hearing and learning needs.

If you suspect your child is having difficulty hearing, please contact us as soon as possible.

What Causes Hearing Loss in Children?

There are a few main causes of hearing loss in children. Congenital factors contribute to children who are born with hearing loss because of genetic issues, prenatal problems, or premature birth. Otis media (ear infection) is also a very common childhood ailment that occurs when fluid accumulates in the middle ear. This can cause difficulty hearing and, in severe cases, may lead to permanent hearing loss. Acquired hearing loss in children can also be triggered by illnesses, physical trauma, exposure to loud sounds, and certain medications.

Signs of Hearing Loss in Children

It’s important to identify the signs of hearing loss early. There are a number of signs that should prompt you to have your child’s hearing tested immediately. These include:

  • Delay in speech and language
  • Failure to respond to loud noises or your voice
  • Poor academic performance
  • Frequent ear infections
  • Disorders associated with hearing loss (i.e., Down syndrome or autism)
  • Family history of hearing loss
